Team UMass Lowell interviewed by CCTV

Team UMass Lowell, Ph.D student Qinggang Yue, Prof. Benyuan Liu and Prof. Xinwen Fu were interviewed by the science and education channel of the CCTV (China Central Television), i.e. CCTV 10, from Dec. 16 ~ 18, at Southeast University, Nanjing, China. The participants also included our collaborators, Dr. Zhen Ling from Southeast University and Dr. Bill Chen from University of Macau. A 25-minute program on mobile security and privacy will be produced from the 3-day interview.

We gave various demos on how various mobile devices with cameras may spy on touch-enabled devices and recognize the touch input. The touch input can be passwords and other input. The password can be the unlock screen pin, mobile banking password, Amazon password, Alipay password or any other password input on a mobile device. The other touch input can be email and other documents.

The purpose of the program is to educate the mass on mobile security and privacy. In addition to the attacks, we give suggestions on protecting the mobile security and privacy:
1. Do NOT perform sensitive transactions in public.
2. Cover your input with hands while touch inputting passwords or anything sensitive.
3. Use our PEK app, which shuffles the keys when passwords are the input and shows a QWERTY keyboard otherwise.

One fun thing about the travel is you feel Nanjing is colder than Boston although Boston's latitude is much higher. The reason is Nanjing does not have a good inside heating system. So be prepared and take some thermals if you travel to Southern China in winter.
